Can you use a chess clock for Go?
A chess clock and a Go clock look identical and are not interchangeable. A chess clock adjusts a single pool of time with increment or delay. Go needs the pool replaced once it empties — by resetting per-move periods (byo-yomi) or by a block of time tied to a count of stones (Canadian overtime). Almost no chess clock implements the first correctly, and none can do the second, because chess has no concept of counting stones.

The overlap is real but narrow: for sudden death and Fischer, a chess clock is a perfectly good Go clock. Everything characteristic of Go timing falls outside it.
Where the mismatch comes from
Chess and Go solve the same problem — do not let a good game be decided by physical speed — with different mechanisms, because the games have different shapes.
A chess game is typically 40 to 60 moves and ends in a decisive position. Adding a few seconds per move is enough: the pool drains, the increment slows the drain, the game finishes. Chess's answers are all pool adjustments — increment adds to it, delay pauses it before it drains, Bronstein refunds from it.
A Go game runs to 200, 250, sometimes 300 moves, and the last fifty are worth points in ones and twos. A pool that runs dry there ends the game arbitrarily in a nearly complete position. So Go replaced the pool: byo-yomi hands you a fresh deadline for every move, indefinitely. Nothing in chess timing does that, which is why the hardware does not either.
Then there is the countdown. Byo-yomi (秒読み) literally means "reading the seconds", after the timekeeper who read them aloud. Go players expect a voice; chess clocks beep at best. It sounds like a cosmetic difference and is not — when a 30-second period is your entire allowance, hearing "…five, four, three…" without looking up from the board is the difference between playing and clock-watching.
Where the confusion is worst: "byo-yomi" on a chess clock
Some digital chess clocks advertise byo-yomi. The DGT1005 Byo-yomi Timer is the best-known exception: the manufacturer sells it specifically for Go and Shogi, and it lets you set both the period length and the number of periods (0 to 9). If you need hardware, that is the class of clock to look for. But the general case is not so clean: many clocks labelled byo-yomi actually implement a fixed delay per move, which behaves differently in the situation that matters most.
The test is simple. Ask what happens to a period when you move in time. In real byo-yomi it resets to full and is not consumed — you can play forever at 29 seconds a move. If the clock instead counts the period down or consumes one per move, it is not byo-yomi, whatever the box says.
What to use instead
There are three honest options for a Go player who needs a clock at the board:
- A dedicated Go clock. Correct and durable, but a niche product — limited availability and priced accordingly.
- A chess clock, accepting the limits. Fine if your club plays sudden death or bonus time and nothing else.
- A phone. The display is the real argument: it can show a running period and the periods remaining and a stone counter at once, in digits readable across a board, and it can speak. A dedicated clock's segment display cannot.
Byoyomi Timer is the third option built properly: byo-yomi as the default rather than an afterthought, Canadian overtime with a tappable stone counter, Fischer with an optional cap, Ing, the NHK format, per-move play and sudden death — with a spoken countdown in Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, English or German. It keeps the screen awake, runs on the Lock Screen through a Live Activity and works in airplane mode. It also leaves out Bronstein and hourglass, because Go does not use them.
